Aug 11, 2021, WASHINGTON, D.C. — An amendment to the Senate infrastructure bill that prohibits taxpayer funding of abortion passed yesterday 50-49. Introduced by Senator James Lankford (R-OK), the amendment ensures the budget will comply with the long-standing Hyde amendment that bars federal funding of abortion as well as the Weldon amendment, which shields from discrimination healthcare providers who refuse to conduct abortions.

Human Coalition Action Executive Director Rev. Dean Nelson has been a vocal and ardent supporter of the Hyde amendment. Recently, he signed this coalition letter urging Congress to protect Hyde. As a Black man, he’s also argued that it provides a legal barrier to the abortion industry’s exploitation of people of color. He issued the following statement in response to the passage of Sen. Lankford’s amendment:

“Human Coalition Action applauds Sen. Lankford for his unwavering dedication to protecting the preborn. The Hyde amendment does what the majority of Americans want by prohibiting taxpayer dollars to subsidize abortion. It is also one of the few remaining legal barriers to the abortion industry’s systematic and racist exploitation of people of color. I urge the House to follow the Senate’s lead and protect precious preborn life by preserving the Hyde amendment.”
