February 2, 2021, DALLASHuman Coalition Action announced today its support for Texas state Representative Matt Shaheen’s bill to end discriminatory abortions.

The bill states: “A person may not knowingly perform or induce on a pregnant woman an abortion based on race, ethnicity or national origin of the unborn child.” It also prohibits others from recommending this type of discriminatory abortion. Over 73% of abortions in the state are performed on minority women.

“Given the racist origin and agenda of the abortion industry and the high percentage of minority women targeted for abortion in our state, we believe this bill is necessary,” said Human Coalition Action Executive Director Rev. Dean Nelson. “Nearly 80% of the leading abortion provider in America’s surgical abortion centers are located within walking distance of minority communities. Texas should pass this bill to demonstrate that all pre-born minority lives matter in this state.”

Rev. Nelson led the charge in July to call out the racist agenda of the abortion industry with a letter to Planned Parenthood about the views of its founder, Margaret Sanger.

The bill would suspend the license of any physician who violates the law. Additionally, the facility where the abortion is performed may also be subject to a fine.

“Minority women, like all women in Texas, need to know about the wide range of resources available to them when they are faced with a surprise pregnancy,” said Human Coalition Action Texas State Director and National Legislative Advisor Chelsey Youman. “The abortion industry has a sordid discriminatory history. Women deserve better than abortion and should be protected from coercion, which is why my organization supports Representative Shaheen’s bill. It’s also why we advocate for increased awareness and access to holistic care for women in the state.”

In his State of the State address last night, Texas Governor Greg Abbott aptly stated, “In this session, we need a law that ensures that the life of every child will be spared from the ravages of abortion. And we should make explicit what should be obvious: no unborn child should be targeted for abortion on the basis of race, sex or disability.”
