MARCH 6, 2024, DALLAS, TX — Human Coalition Action joined a coalition of pro-life leaders this week in a letter to Alabama Governor Kay Ivey opposing the passage of proposed IVF legislation, SB 159/HB 237. This bill would offer legal immunity to individuals or entities involved in IVF services, even if their actions wrongfully harm or kill embryos.

The coalition’s letter reads, in part:

“A child in the embryonic stage of development is of incalculable value to his or her family, and though young, is not of any less worth to their parents than a child at three months in the womb, nine months in the womb, or after the very moment of birth. Both science and logic have made it clear that embryos must be accorded the same human rights and level of dignity that all other human beings — at every developmental stage of life — are granted.”

Jeff Bradford, President of Human Coalition Action, stated: “At Human Coalition Action, we believe that human life begins at the moment of fertilization, and we are determined to care for and protect every child at any stage, including the embryonic period. All children have a right to life and must be protected as persons under the law, regardless of their stage of development.”

“We implore Governor Ivey to reject these bills and call on IVF facilities to protect the very lives they create. As pro-life leaders, we see this as part of our duty to protect children from being exploited or selectively destroyed. History has taught us that when a class of human beings is cast as less-than-human, they are in great danger of persecution or even genocide. This is no different for children in the embryonic stage of development.”

The letter was led by the pro-life group Live Action. It argues that the legislation passed by the legislature to grant blanket immunity to IVF clinics and doctors who exploit or destroy human embryos based on the child’s characteristics such as sex, eye color or developmental abnormalities. Protections would include in cases of “a doctor who secretly uses his own sperm to create embryos, deliberately implants someone else’s child into a different IVF mother’s womb, or intentionally destroys the embryos he creates against the wishes of the parents.” The bills would also prevent families undergoing IVF from legal recourse in these cases.

The coalition is led by Live Action president Lila Rose, and additional signees include Kristan Hawkins, Marjorie Dannenfelser, Jeanne F. Mancini, Brent Leatherwood, John Mize, Ryan Anderson, and Brian Burch, among others.
