AUSTIN, TEXAS, May 3, 2022 – Human Coalition Action on Tuesday praised Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt for signing into law the Oklahoma Heartbeat Act, legislation which prohibits abortion after detection of a fetal hearbeat – as early as six weeks.

“We applaud Gov. Stitt for taking yet another decisive action to protect preborn children in the state,” said Chelsey Youman, National Legislative Advisor with Human Coalition Action. “This bill will save lives.”

Oklahoma’s law is modeled after the Texas Heartbeat Act, landmark legislation which has been in effect for nearly eight months and which has survived multiple court challenges. The monthly number of abortions in the state fell by more than half in its first three months in effect . Texas’ bill created a unique enforcement mechanism by which private citizens have the right to take legal action to uphold the law.

Earlier this month, Gov. Stitt signed a bill prohibiting abortion except to save the life of the mother. That law is set to go into effect this summer.

“As we hope for the repeal of Roe v. Wade, states need to be acting now to ensure their laws reflect the sanctity of life. Oklahoma is doing just that,” Youman stated. “The state earlier this year enacted a strong pro-life law, and it is continuing to uphold human dignity through the law.”
