AUSTIN, TEXAS, December 13, 2022 – Human Coalition Action on Tuesday expressed disappointment that Iowa district court Judge Celene Gogerty refused to lift a permanent injunction on Iowa’s “heartbeat” bill, continuing to block the 2019 law from going into effect. The legislation protects children with beating hearts from abortion in the state. Without these protections, children may die from abortion as late as 20 weeks gestation.

“Iowa’s elected representatives chose to protect vulnerable humans in the womb. The fact that the district court continues to mandate an injunction on the law is oppressive, particularly after the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling earlier this year,” said Chelsey Youman, National Legislative Advisor with Human Coalition Action. “We are hopeful that the state supreme court will rectify this meritless judgment and allow this life-saving law to stand.”
