April 9, 2024, WASHINGTON, DC — On Monday, Human Coalition Action joined leading national pro-life groups in demanding a congressional hearing on the case of the “D.C. Five,” babies reportedly aborted at the facility of D.C. abortionist Dr. Cesare Santangelo.
Human Coalition Action’s President Jeff Bradford joined the letter to committee members, along with other pro-life leaders, asking Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, to hold a hearing on the case and investigate Dr. Santangelo for possible illegal partial-birth abortions.
“I am proud to join this effort in defense of the dignity of children in the womb,” Bradford stated. “These five precious children were victims of the abortion industry through cruel – and possibly illegal – abortion procedures. They deserved to live. The absolute least we can do as a society now is to give them a proper burial and investigate whether their barbaric deaths were the result of criminal acts.
“All children in the womb, no matter their gestational age, must be protected as persons under the law, and we call on our elected officials to give them this protection that is rightfully theirs.”
Human Coalition was part of a coalition of 50 pro-life groups signing the letter to Chairman Jordan, including Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America, the Thomas More Society, the American Association of Prolife Obstetricians and Gynecologists, Family Research Council, Students for Life of America, and LiveAction.
“Because the District of Columbia falls under federal jurisdiction and federal crimes may have been committed by Cesare Santangelo, we urge the House Judiciary Committee to hold a thorough hearing into the D.C. Five. These five children should be toddlers now, but instead are lying in a morgue awaiting the justice that continues to be denied to them. Cesare Santangelo must be investigated. We demand Justice for the Five,” the letter states.
The “D.C. Five” were five babies whose remains were discovered by pro-life activists on March 25, 2022 outside the Washington Surgi-Clinic in Washington, D.C. The activists named the babies Ángel, Christopher X, Harriet, Holly, and Phoenix.
According to the letter, several Ob-Gyns – including former abortionists – reviewed pictures of the remains. At least three of the children were estimated to have been aborted in the third trimester, and federal law “allegedly may have been violated in conjunction” with their deaths. The illegal partial-birth abortion procedure is an abortion method in which the child is delivered alive in the breech position and killed before his or her head is delivered from the birth canal.
The pro-life activists have called on the Biden administration to investigate Santangelo’s clinic. The administration has not conducted an investigation, but approved the D.C. Medical Examiner discarding the babies’ remains. Dozens of members of Congress intervened to stop the disposal.
“While these experts believe Ángel and Holly may have been killed via the tragically legal procedure of dismemberment abortion, several federal laws—including the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act (18 USC § 1531) and/or the Born Alive Infants Protection Act (1 USC § 8)—allegedly may have been violated in conjunction with the deaths of the other three,” the letter states.
